Read more...Fred Burbank, M.D. graduated with honors from Stanford University (1963) and the Stanford University Schoolof Medicine (1968). While still a medical student, he developed and published: “Burbank F: A computer diagnostic system for the diagnosis of prolonged liver disease. Am J Med 46:401-415, 1969.” To broaden his medical education, he was a rotating intern at Los Angeles County Harbor General Hospital in Torrance, CA.
Following internship, he wasa Staff Epidemiologist at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, publishing the first computer-generated analysis and display of cancer mortality in the United States: “Burbank F: Patterns in cancer mortality in the United States, 1950-1967. Natl Cancer InstMonogr No 33:1-594, 1971.”
Following his uniform service in the United States Public Health Service, he becamea psychiatry resident and then a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford Medical School and also studied for five years at the C.G. Jung Psychoanalytic Institute of San Francisco, CA.
Thereafter, he completeda diagnostic radiology residency and a cardiovascular and interventional radiology fellowship and became a faculty member in the Department of Radiology at the Stanford University Medical School. His research work there won the Association of University Radiologists (AUR), Memorial Award, presented at the 1983 Annual AUR meeting in Mobile, AL for his publication:“Burbank F: Determinants of contrast enhancement for digital subtraction angiography. Invest Radiol 18:308-316,1983.
In 1987 he entered private practice at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center, Department of Surgery/ Section of Radiology in Mission Viejo, CA. While in private practice he invented, developed, and commercialized the Mammotome vacuum-assisted breast biopsy system and published “Burbank F. Stereotactic breast biopsy: Its history, its present, and its future. The American Surgeon 62(2):128-150,1996.”With interest in postpartum hemorrhage and uterine fibroids, he later published the book: “Burbank F. Fibroids, Menstruation, Childbirth, and Evolution: The Fascinating Story of Uterine Blood Vessels, Wheatmark Publishing, Tucson, AZ.
Dr. Burbank has written 70 medical articles, 5 medical book chapters, and 2 medical textbooks. He is an inventor on over 220 patents.

Stephen Nelson earned his undergraduate degree in biologyfrom California State Polytechnic University of Pomona, graduating valedictorian and summa cum laude.
